Week-long Cultural Tour of Chichicastenango and Lake Atitlan

Immersive Program with the artisans:
(market days in Chichicastenango: every Thursday and Sunday)

DAY 1:

  • Meet with the women from the community of Quiejel for lunch
  • Liso and brocade backstrap weaving demonstrations
  • Embroidery demonstration
  • Traditional dances and songs
  • Stay overnight with a homestay family

DAY 2:

  • Market day in Chichicastenango with an artisan
  • Stay overnight with your homestay family

DAY 3:

  • Meet with the women from the community of Chuacruz
  • Spin raw ixcaco cotton
  • Brocade backstrap weaving demonstrations
  • Textiles joining demonstrations using randas
  • Stay overnight with a homestay family in Panajachel

DAY 4:

  • Experience a hot bath in a Temascal (Maya Sauna) in the comunity of Patanatic
  • Travel to the Patanatic Community to see one of the best viewpoints of the lake (30 minutes steep walk)
  • Meet with the women during a picnic with traditional dishes
  • Watch and try to weave baskets from pines
  • Stay overnight with a homestay family in Panajachel

DAY 5:

  • Meet with your personal indigenous master weaver
  • Learn backstrap weaving and keep your woven work of art

DAY 6:

  • Cross Lake Atitlán by boat and visit our organic natural dye and medicinal plant garden (cancelled in case of bad weather)
  • Natural dyeing demonstration
  • Liso backstrap weaving demonstration
  • Ikat tying demonstration
  • Stay overnight with a homestay family in San Juan

DAY 7:

  • Meet with the women from the community of Nahualá for lunch
  • Liso and Brocade backstrap weaving demonstrations
  • Embroidery demonstration
  • Hike in the surrounding Highlands to Maya Ceremony Sites and get a personalized Maya Ceremony

The artisans are paid a fair wage for their time and involvement in each of the activities. Proceeds support our social community programs. (Pricing includes a tax donation receipt for US citizens)

Tours are in English and Spanish.

Included: Round trip transportation from Maya Traditions office to the community and typical lunches (vegetarian and vegan meals available upon request).

Tours are customizable. Homestay, private transportation, and other services can be arranged.
