Last week we finalized our 7-week initiative on the Prevention and Detection of Breast cancer. In total, 52 women from the communities of San Juan La Laguna, Quiejel, Patantic, Chirijox, Chuacruz, and Nahuala were part of this initiative, where each week they learned about the importance of their physical health and well-being. Many of the women had never received this type of consultation before and expressed their awareness now on the matter. Elena from San Juan La Laguna stated, “The necessity for these exams helped us lose our shyness. I did not know what all to expect before entering the clinic, but I knew it was important to do. We tend to be shy about showing our bodies, but when it comes to our health, these types of exams are of great importance.” A big thank you to Dr. Carlos Morales and the Center of Imagenes Medicas in Solola (IMESSA) for your support. Without you, this would not have been possible!🤗 . La semana pasada terminó nuestra iniciativa de 7 semanas sobre la prevención y deteción de cancer de mama. Un total 52 mujeres de las comunidades de San Juan La Laguna, Quiejel, Patantic, Chirijox, Chuacruz, y Nahuala formaron parte de esta iniciativa en la que cada semana las mujeres aprendieron sobre la importancia de su salud fisica y su bienestar. Muchas de las mujeres nunca habian pasado antes por este tipo de consultas y expresaron la importancia que ahora le dan. Elena de San Juan La Laguna dijo, "La necesidad nos obligó a perder la vergüenza, yo no sabía cómo iba a ser este examen pero sabía que era importante. Muchas veces nos da verguenza de enseñar nuestro cuerpo pero cuando existe una enfermedad debemos ir o simplemente asegurar que nos encontramos bien" Muchísimas gracias Dr. Carlos Morales y Centro de Imagenes Medicas en Solola (IMESSA) por su apoyo. Two weeks ago, 12 women from our partner communiti

Two weeks ago, 12 women from our partner communities of Chuacruz, Nahualá, Patanatic and San Juan La Laguna participated in a dynamic workshop to learn about developing business models. Many of the women are involved in various types of product sales in their local communities, including medicinal herbs, handmade textiles, and home-grown vegetables. This workshop served to help them understand the importance of clearly defining a business before starting the business itself. Among other activities, they played a game about entrepreneurship using fictitious businesses to identify important aspects of a well-designed business. This was a new topic for many of the women, but at the end of the workshop they learned the beginning steps of creating a successful business model to be able to compete within the market. We are very thankful to Hony Julaju from @puebloapueblo for facilitating this workshop and helping us support these women in growing their sales and generating their own income! . Hace dos semanas, 12 mujeres de nuestras comunidades asociadas de Chuacruz, Nahualá, Patanatic y San Juan La Laguna participaron en un dinámico taller en el que aprendieron sobre el desarrollo de modelos de negocio. Muchas de las mujeres están involucradas en la venta de diferentes productos en sus comunidades. Productos como hierbas medicinales, textiles hechos a mano y verduras de cosecha propia. Este taller les sirvió para entender la importancia de definir claramente un negocio antes de empezar el mismo. Entre las actividades que hicieron, las mujeres hicieron un juego sobre el emprendimiento utilizando negocios ficticios identificando los aspectos importantes de un negocio bien diseñado. Este fue un área desconocida para muchas de ellas, pero al final del taller todas aprendieron los primeros pasos a la hora de crear modelos de negocios y así poder competir en el mercado.

Today we give a shout out to our partner, @gophilanthropic. We are incredibly thankful to have had their support in our Family Vegetable Garden Pilot Project this past year, through which 24 women and their families were nourished and continue to benefit from. A big thank you to Mae, Programs Coordinator for Latin America, for being a beacon of support throughout our partnership, as well as to GoPhil for their commitment on facilitating a network of community with other dedicated NGOs in Guatemala. As part of our Youth Education Program, 8 university students from the communities of Nahualá, Quiejel, Chuacruz, Patatanic and San Juan La Laguna recently had the opportunity to visit the Educational Center for Rural Development and Adaptation to Climate Change (CEDRACC) located in Santa Cruz La Laguna. Along with Maya Traditions’ executive director and social programs coordinator, the students participated in various activities by the “learning by doing” methodology. Throughout the workshop, the students participated in activities to learn and practice sustainable development so that they can apply it in their communities. They learned about the importance of native trees, agroecological gardens, the breeding of creole birds and their nutritional value, as well as ways to gather information digitally in their communities. They also learned about the milpa system, an ancestral agroforestry system made up of corn, beans, squash, herbs, fruit and forest trees, and their relationship with human beings. With the support of the CEDRACC team, each student group is now using this knowledge to design and implement a service project for their respective communities.
