VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN GUATEMALA

Fundacion Tradiciones Mayas (FTM) is a small, fair trade Fair Trade business based in Panajachel, Sololá, Guatemala. For over ten years we have worked with Maya indigenous weavers in the highlands of Guatemala. Our mission is to support weaving groups, hand crochet artisans and small family businesses through providing consistent income as well as improving the quality of life through much needed healthcare and education projects. The FTM office is located in Panajachel approximately 2.5 hours from Guatemala City on the shores of the picturesque Lake Atitlan in the Department of Sololá.

Maya Traditions is looking for self motivated, open minded, creative and committed volunteers. The establishment of the Guatemalan foundation Tradiciones Mayas was initiated as a means in which to create a sustainable structure for the artisan groups with whom we work. Currently the business arm of Maya Traditions helps support projects such as the Herbal Medicine Garden and workshops and the Scholarship program which began in 1997. The establishment of the foundation aims to build upon the consistent, untiring generosity of donars and friends of FTM in assisting us in maintaining and further developing its commitment to assisting the artisans groups with access to health care and education.  We appreciate the work, skills and contributions of volunteers, who in the past have helped us move forward in our goals and objectives.

Depending on your personal skills and specific interests it may be possible to design your own volunteer placement, however if you do not already have a specific project or area in mind the following areas may be considered:
  • Product Design
  • Marketing
  • Computer skills training
  • Teaching English (Experienced EFL/ESL teachers only)
  • Translation
  • Important data entry
  • Creating a fundraising letter
  • Medicinal herb project (working in the herb garden)
  • Fundraising
  • Grant writing
  • Research follow up on the effectiveness of our health and education projects
